Red Wine Tasting Notes

Pinot Noir, 2006 Cole Ranch Reserve Esterlina Estate Vineyard
Price: $65.00
Quantity in Basket: none

Esterlina is pleased to release the second Reserve Pinot Noir from our Cole Ranch Appellation/Vineyard. Our Cole Ranch Pinot Noirs are usually very different from our other pinots because Cole Ranch’s weather is cooler, and the vineyard is at a higher elevation. This vintage, however, is elegant and restrained, yet full-bodied, with spicy berries, and cherry cola flavors. We hope you find the experience satisfying, as we are very pleased with the way this wine developed. NOTE: Please, let the wine settle for a week or so after you receive it, then enjoy.

2006 Cole Ranch Reserve Pinot Noir: - 272 cases bottled
Price: $65.00

Mario's Gran Rojo, Sonoma County 2006
Price: $25.00
Quantity in Basket: none

As was the case with the 2005 version of this wine, the primary varietal in the Mario's is our Alexander Valley Cabernet, with a bit of Cole Ranch Merlot, our Dry Creek Syrah, and a hint of Petite Sirah. While the 2005 was very good, this vintage is markedly better. 2006 was a much better growing season for us, and it shows in this wine. It smells enticing, with lots of rich, black cherry and spice aromas. The flavors offer plenty for red wine lovers, too; lots of ripe currant, cherry and plum fruit, spicy oak, and supported by good acidity and medium tannins. Mario's Gran Rojo will age very well, and will be enjoyable for years to come.

Mario's Gran Rojo, 2006 Sonoma County - 533 cases produced.
Price: $25.00 ($20.00 Wine Club)

2007 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, Esterlina Estate Vineyard
Price: $45.00
Quantity in Basket: none

The 2007 Esterlina Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir is very much like our 2006 Anderson Valley Reserve Pinot Noir—a wine we believe to be among the best we have ever produced. Again, from this vineyard, one is apt to get those ripe black cherry, plum, earthy mushroom and spicy cinnamon flavors, and this wine shows those traits. For as ripe as it is, however, it has more than enough acidity. It ends with the customary very long finish. NOTE: Like any red wine that we ship to you, please let it settle for a week or two after you receive it.

Pinot Noir, 2006 Russian River Valley, Sterling Family Vineyard
Price: $45.00
Quantity in Basket: none

The 2006 Russian River Pinot starts with cherry, raspberry and vanilla-oak aromas. The mouth has wonderful flavors of ripe and juicy raspberries, cranberries and red cherries, with a touch of spice. Naturally, it has the classic acidity always present in our pinot. The finish is great, too. Enjoy!

Zinfandel, 2005 Russian River Valley
Price: $28.00
Quantity in Basket: none

Another ripe and delicious Zinfandel from the Bacigalupi Vineyard, it is perhaps the most decadent of any we have released from that vineyard. Lots of rich plum and spice aromas, with hints of coffee and vanilla. The mouth is ripe elegance with wild red and black berries, anise, cocoa and vanilla-oak flavors.

Zinfandel, 2005 Russian River Valley - 326 cases produced.
Price: $28.00 ($22.40 Wine Club)

2004 Russian River Valley (Bacigalupi Vineyard) Zinfandel
Price: $28.00
Quantity in Basket: none

This is the third Zinfandel we've made from the Bacigalupi Vineyard, and, as usual we are very happy with it. This wine starts with rich aromas of plum, coffee, and chocolate, with an underlying hint of baking spice. The mouth is elegant and balanced, with plenty of ripe plum, blackberry, cocoa and vanilla-oak flavors. Enjoy.

Price: $28.00 ($22.40 for our members)

2006 (Sonoma Mountain, Janian Vineyard) Syrah
Price: $32.00
Quantity in Basket: none

Because the Janian Vineyard is in the Sonoma Mt. appellation, a cool weather region, you get great flavors typically found in Northern Rhone wines which are atypical to California Syrahs. Recently, wine writer & Master Sommelier Catherine Fallis discussed this anomaly, writing that our 2005 Janian Syrah was a "little gem" and that Esterlina "hit the bull's eye on this one." (Read the full review at http://planetgrape.net) We believe the 2006 vintage is even better. It has lots of terrific aromas, like sweet blackberry, rich smoky pipe tobacco, white pepper and toasted oak. The mouth is full of complex flavors, too, with ripe black fruit, applewood smoked bacon and white pepper. Serve with roast chicken, pork tenderloin, or Beef Wellington.

Syrah 2006 Esterlina Sonoma Mountain(Janian Vineyard) - 400 cases
Price: $32.00 (Wine club price $25.60)

Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 Alexander Valley, Esterlina Lazy S Vineyard)
Price: $40.00
Quantity in Basket: none

As this vineyard continues to mature, we continue to get nice complexity on the Lazy S Cabernet. It starts with enticing black plum, cherry, and smoky aromas. The mouth is richer and riper than even the 2004 Cabernet, with juicy dark cherry, black currant, toasted oak, plum and dark chocolate, with firm, drying tannins. The finish is long and spicy.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 Alexander Valley, Esterlina Lazy "S" Vineyards - 631 cases produced
Price: $40.00 ($32 Wine Club)

Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004 Cole Ranch
Price: $30.00
Quantity in Basket: none

Again, 2004 was an excellent vintage, and this Cole Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is further proof of that. We were lucky enough to get good weather in Fall 2004, which gets the long-hanging fruit in our Cole Ranch appellation ripe.
The mouth has ripe black cherry, plum and spice flavors, with subtle tannins. This one will age very nicely, and is a great bottle for the price.

2005 Sonoma County Port
Price: $28.00
Quantity in Basket: none

Esterlina’s ruby-styled port has always been combination of grapes. The 2005 vintage continues that tradition, with some Dry Creek zinfandel, syrah, and a bit of the traditional port grape, Touriga Nacional. As always, it is a big, indulgent port that will pair well with desserts, such as a warm chocolate cake, or by itself. Enjoy.
Bottle Size 375ml

Merlot, 2005 Cole Ranch
Price: $22.00
Quantity in Basket: none

2005 Merlot (Cole Ranch) Occasionally, we get questions as to why we continue to make Merlot. Cole Ranch Merlot is quite unique from typical California Merlots because of the climate. The cool weather there makes the wine very Bordeaux-like. To us, that means a complex, medium-bodied wine, with light cherry and earthy-smoky flavors. Should age very well, certainly in the 7-10 year range.

Merlot, 2005 Cole Ranch - 985 cases produced.
Price: $22.00 (Wine club price $17.60)
